I was wondering--do you have a DSLR or do you use a pojnt and shoot? If you have a DSLR I could give you some tips that might cut down on the number of photos between captures. They might work on a point and shoot, too if it has a pretty good manual mode.
In manual mode:
Set your apeture around f7-f9 for nice depth of field
Set your ISO (if camera will allow it) at the lowest setting to reduce noise
Set your shutter for 10-20 seconds (more or less depending on the frequency of the lightning strikes) You might need to go as slow as a half-second shutter to as long as a couple minutes depending on light conditions too. During the day you won't be able to go as long on shutter without the use of a neutral density filter on the lens than you can during evening or night. (you might even get multiple bolts in one exposure with a longer shutter if conditions allow it)
Use a tripod or set the camera on something very sturdy
I hope this helps--I know how frustrating capturing lightning is

The first two times I attempted lightning photos, I nailed a good one on my second shot. (Both are in my gallery.)
Ever since then, I haven't come anywhere near to an acceptable photo!!
